The Goats of Fairview, South Africa

These goats are a feature of life at the Fairview vineyard in the south Paarl region of Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa.

This tower is the first sight to greet you on arrival.

DSCN1994If you weren’t aware of this ‘gotel’ it comes as something of a surprise to find a head poking out of the uppermost windows.  Though to be honest, your nose will alert you as to their proximity.  🙂

The vintners have named some vintages after the goats,  so it’s possible to choose from selections including “Goats du Roam”, “Bored Doe,” and “Goatfather”.

This marketing ploy has been extended from wines through to T shirts and assorted memorabilia which has landed them in some trouble with the French, who so far haven’t seen the funny side of it!

There’s an interesting photographic display in the main building here (which also houses a restaurant) showing the forefathers who have developed the vineyard over the years.  Well worth a visit.

About Sandra

I cruise the French waterways with my husband four or five months a year, and write fiction and poetry. I love animals, F1 motor racing, French bread and my husband, though not necessarily in that order.
